ICELANDIC TRAVERSE

The Iceland Traverse is a unique 588-mile adventure that takes you from the Hraunhafnartangi Lighthouse (North) to the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse (South). This trail covers a wide range of landscapes, including mountains, deserts, valleys, and sometimes muddy roads. Some days you’ll see stunning views, while on others, it’s just gray sand as far as the eye can see.

Say goodbye to comfort

It’s important to know that this hike doesn’t offer many comforts. There are a few campsites along the way, but you won’t find many stores to buy food. To survive, you’ll need to plan and pack your own meals in advance. And then there’s the weather. Even though we had decent weather by Icelandic standards, it was still pretty tough. We had to deal with cold winds, camping in storms, and sleeping in freezing temperatures, and this was during the summer.

An idea

The idea for this hike came up a few days after we finished hiking the Cape Wrath Trail. Bart suggested it to Bob, and despite knowing it was a bit crazy, Bob agreed quickly. Planning was a huge task. Getting supplies to the middle of Iceland is tricky, and getting around without a car can be expensive. Plus, some parts of the trail have no water sources.

challenges along the Way

But that’s not all. The hike also involves crossing rivers, dealing with possible storms, navigating without clear trail markings, and the mental challenge of hiking for 18 days with limited food and water. To help you prepare, we’ve organized our information into different themes, which you can explore. If you want to know more, feel free to get in touch with us. In the end, this hike is a true adventure that takes you far away from civilization. The landscapes you’ll experience are stunning and completely unique. And when you finish, you’ll have a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
